Asia’s Phoenix Morissette Soars High, Stuns Jam-Packed Big Dome in First Major Solo Concert

Feb 22, 2018

Asia’s Phoenix Morissette soared high on February 20, Tuesday, reaching another peak in her career as she successfully staged her first-ever major solo concert titled “Morissette is Made” at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

“I couldn’t believe it that I was being made to go solo at the Araneta. I felt pressured because it’s such a big venue. But I am truly grateful that Wish 107.5 trusts me, as not everyone is given the chance to perform solo there. I’m really thrilled and happy!,” the belter shared.

Fans and supporters wave their phones and gadgets while enjoying the smooth vocals of Morissette, no doubt a phenomenal sight from an aurally entertained crowd.

The 21-year-old diva drew thousands of fans, known as “Mowienatics,” who filled the iconic concert venue to the top, and made it even fancier with the souvenir light sticks they made use of throughout the sold-out, two-hour show.

A showcase of vocal and dance prowess

Morissette is widely known for her exceptional belting out, intentional vocal breaks and seemingly-effortless whistles. These were showcased in her takes on “Against All Odds,” “Mahal Naman Kita,” and “Rise Up,” and through her own hits, “Throwback” and “Diamante.”

She also received resonating applause when she stunned the crowd with a medley of teleserye theme songs she recorded, including “Ikaw Ay Ako,” “Kapag Ako Ay Nagmahal,” “Ano’ng Nangyari Sa Ating Dalawa,” and “Hanggang.”

Mr. Christian Bautista shared a candid conversation with Morissette, giving the diva’s fans and supporters a peek into the thoughts of the lovely breakthrough artist.

However, she proved she is not just great at hitting high notes. Her being well-versed on stage was highlighted in her mellow duet of Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” with Asia’s Romantic Balladeer Christian Bautista.

The young diva also showed she is a dance floor darling when she sang and danced to Jessie J’s “Burnin’ Up,” and Christina Aguilera’s “Come On Over.” She further teamed up with Hashtags’ Zeus Collins for a groovy number, featuring the Bruno Mars-Cardi B collab, “Finesse.”

Morisette shows the crowd that she not only possesses a great singing voice, she can also groove to the beat as she performs with Zeus and ATeam.

Paying tribute to her roots

“Morissette Is Made” was also a night of looking back at her roots.

The songstress shared with the audience that her first vocal coach was her father, whose favored genre is rock music. In a tribute of sorts, she did a medley of classic rock songs — Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” — and injected it with her trademark vocal cracks.

She also paid homage to her Visayan origins as she covered Cebu-based Kurt Fick’s stroll-in-the-park track, “Puhon.”

The Wish Chorale harmonizes with Morissette in an inspiring arrangement of the songs ‘The Color Purple’ and ‘Rise Up.’

Harking back to her musical theater stint, the versatile singer, together with Wish 107.5’s own vocal ensemble, the Wish Chorale, sang “The Color Purple” from the musical of the same name.

The same theme of reminiscing was also evident in the special video presentations shown in between the production numbers. Presented in a rather raw and intimate manner, the lady belter narrated the story behind the fulfilment of her dream Big Dome concert — from the initial talks down to the rehearsals.

Morissette ultimately paid back her deep debt of gratitude to her fans who helped made her become the artist she is now.

‘Another superstar’

One of the main highlights of the show was her stirring medley of “diva” classics, which included Lea Salonga’s “The Journey,” Kuh Ledesma’s “Dito Ba,” Zsa Zsa Padilla’s “Minsan Pa,” Jaya’s “Wala Na Bang Pag-ibig,” Sharon Cuneta’s “Sana’y Mahintay Ang Walang Hanggan,” Lani Misalucha’s “Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin,” and Regine Velsquez-Alcasid’s “Pangarap Ko Ang Ibigin Ka.”

The special number was a fitting intro to the show-stopping duets between Morissette and her surprise guest, Regine. The two OPM stars shared the stage for a memorable performance of “Akin Ka Na Lang” and “You Are My Song.”

The two queens deliver a superb duet, leaving the crowd mesmerized by their enchanting voices, and wanting for more.

Making their moment even more awe-inspiring, the Asia’s Songbird recognized Morissette’s talent and hardwork, saying “You are incredible. I am so happy for you, you deserve everything. You waited for your turn and now, this is your turn…I think we have produced another superstar.”

Morissette capped off the night with a breathtaking rendition of “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack, “This Is Me,” and an encore performance of her viral and Wish award-winning revival of Little Mix’s “Secret Love Song.”

“Morissette is Made” was presented by Wish 107.5, in cooperation with Stages and RankOne Productions. Paolo Valenciano served as the director, with Adonis Tabanda as the musical director.

Mr. Daniel Razon, better known as Kuya Daniel, shares a warm, brotherly hug with Morissette as he hands the singer a bouquet of flowers.

In attendance were BMPI CEO and President Kuya Daniel Razon, ABS-CBN Chief Content Officer Ms. Charo Santos-Concio, American producer Rhett Lawrence, the country’s Concert King Martin Nievera, Jamie Rivera, Jed Madela, Daryl Ong, Tim Pavino, and YouTube star AJ Rafael among others.
