Christian Bautista reveals his new sound and ultimate wish as an artist

May 18, 2017

Christian Bautista’s calming and captivating voice was launched into the music scene when he became the first grand finalist of the singing competition, “Star in a Million.” Though he only bagged fourth place in the show that produced Erik Santos and Sheryn Regis, he still went on to secure a recording deal.

Around 13 years since that pivotal point in his career, he was able to release nine studio albums,  hold numerous concerts here and abroad, star in TV series and films, and earn a following across Asia.

On May 16, the Asia’s Romantic Balladeer sat down with DJ Robin Nievera for a WISHclusive interview on board the Wish 107.5 Bus. He talked about his latest single under Universal Records, “Kapit,” and his way of making his music more relatable to the younger generation of listeners.

What is your new song all about?

I have a new single and with this track, I am trying to reinvent myself as we must all the time. Kasi, as an artist, we must always innovate.

The song was written by Brian Lotho (Join the Club) and yours truly, pero mas Brian. It’s called “Kapit” (Hold On) and through this song, I want to tell, “kung mayroon kayong mga problema, kapit lang.”

This song was produced by Sonic State. They actually produced a song for Jennylyn Mercado, na kapag pinakinggan mo yung song na yun, para siyang bago — millennial in a bit.

Your song showcases your new and innovative sound. What’s your goal with this new track?

I really hope na this song can translate my [new sound] to my listeners and to my old fans. It’s scary to release something new but [at one point], you really have to. Nakilala na kasi ako as someone who sings theme songs and ballads, which is fine — I love singing ballads. Pero syempre, we have that time in our lives na parang gusto ko naman ng iba.

Are you releasing a full-length album soon?

It’s coming up, around September, but for now, singles muna. I am also looking for other producers who will help me with my new materials…Merong next song, hindi pa nailalabas, it’s called “Huling Harana” and hindi siya yung parang typical na parang “The Way You Look At Me” or Broadway-ish.

What is your ultimate wish as an artist?

I’ve always been singing other people’s songs and it’s fine. Pero ang goal ko pa rin in life ay makasulat ng hit song.

During his guesting, he performed “Two Forevers,” “The Way You Look at Me,” and a WISHclusive rendition of his new song.

Aside from “Kapit,” Christian is brewing up more projects for his fans. He will join the cast of the Filipino remake of the hit Korean drama “My Love from the Star,” and will co-host the new season of #Soundtrip on E!.

Alongside other top-notch OPM acts, he will headline the concert, “Love Throwback 2: The Repeat,” slated on May 27 at the PICC Plenary Hall.
