‘Phantoms’ and The Undying Spirit of Sponge Cola

Despite the emergence of promising bands, Pinoy rock superstar Sponge Cola remains to be relevant in today’s music scene, with new tunes and sold-out tours here in the country and abroad to boot.

In September, the band — first formed in 1998 — released their latest single called “Phantoms.” By looking at the comments section of the track’s tastefully done music video, one would see how long-time fans are reacting to the song with much enthusiasm, thanks to its heavy alt-rock sensibilities that resemble the sound of their early releases.

Last month, the award-winning group composed of Yael Yuzon (vocals), Gosh Dilay (bass), Erwin “Armo” Armovit (guitars) and Ted Cruz (drums) returned to the Wish 107.5 Bus to perform the said piece live for the first time.

According to Yuzon, “Phantoms” is something that “requires a lot of backing vocals, a lot of dynamics and intensity. [Armo] added layer after layer of guitars.”

“The song is rather lush. We went quite overboard during the recording, so now, we need to uphold and maintain the quality of the song,” Armovit shared before they debuted their live performance of the supercharged tune.

However, despite the taxing recording sessions they’ve gone through, he clarified that the band had “enjoyed the good challenge.”

Giving a metaphoric spin into the theme of change, “Phantoms” marked the first time that Armovit wrote a track on his own for the band.

In an Instagram post, he revealed that the piece is “an anthem of transformation.”

“Awakening the strength that hides in you (Wake and show the world what you can do)/ Deep within the light is shining through/ A brave and new beginning we will never part/ Dancing with the phantoms of our hearts,” the guitarist-songwriter penned for the song’s coda, summing up the moral of his original piece.

Perhaps alluding to the band’s story itself, Sponge Cola’s newest offering is one compelling composition that speaks of a principle that has made them an enduring force in the music scene: Embrace change, rise above drawbacks, and never forget who you really are.
