SB19 Made History at Lollapalooza — Here Are 5 Wish Performances to Revisit

On July 31, Philippine time, SB19 became the first all-Filipino homegrown act to grace the Lollapalooza stage. The quintet, comprising Pablo, Josh, Stell, Justin, and Ken, played the Allianz Stage and delivered a career-defining set. 

The P-pop kings waved the flag of OPM high — and with much pride — as they brought their A-game and performed hits, including “DAM,” “Gento,” “MAPA,” “VISA,” and “DUNGKA!” They also captivated the crowd with a cover of Francis M’s “Mga Kababayan Ko,” one of the songs on the soundtrack of the upcoming film “Forgotten Island,” and the live debut of their newest song, “LAWLESS.”

Talking about their latest offering, Justin said in an interview with Billboard: “Basically we just need to be ‘Lawless’ and, you know, show the world how chaotic we are because that’s being authentic. And we want it to be authentic… Let’s go, Lawlesspalooza!”

“DUNGKA!” (Wish Stopover Sessions)

Dominating a makeshift stage — with water guns to boot — SB19 proved their commanding stage presence in this Stopover Sessions performance of “DUNGKA!” The song, which won Wish Pop Song of the Year at the 11th Wish Music Awards (WMAs), is the group’s tasteful way of fending off unwanted vibes. And if the infectious “DUN KA NA! DUN! DUN KA NA! DUN HUY!!!” chant won’t have you screaming in a momentous performance, then we don’t know what will.

“Time” (Wish Bus Version)

This Wish Bus version is a great showcase of the P-pop stalwarts’ vocal prowess. For a song that reminds listeners to make the most of every moment in this borrowed time, it’s the kind of rendition that rightfully does justice to the song's emotional core.

“Halimaw [talaga] eh. Walang tapon! Areglo and equal parts. Walang sapawan at bumagay ‘yung kanya-kanya nilang linya. Atake 🔥,” a YouTube user named @aleanecampos commented.

But if you ask us, the 3:00 mark is where this opus peaks.

“MAPA” (7th Wish Music Awards)

There’s always something heart-rending about SB19’s ballads. Maybe it's the way these songs slow things down. After all, they’re a breath of fresh air amid their usually high-energy repertoire. While they do showcase the group's vocal range, it’s their storytelling and the way they breathe life into heartfelt lyrics that truly stand out.

This version of “MAPA” — performed at the 7th WMAs in January 2022 in a crowdless venue due to pandemic restrictions — is as poignant as it can be. The somber setting made lines like “‘Wag mag-alala/ Ipikit ang ‘yong mata, tahan na / Pahinga muna, ako na’ng bahala,” hit even harder.

“KALAKAL” (SB19 x Gloc-9, Wish Bus Version)

Two heavyweights from their respective genres, SB19 and Gloc-9 showed how collaborations are done in “KALAKAL.” Lyrically, the song finds the two acts expressing their sentiments on Filipino consumerism and one’s staying power. But more than that, it explores what can be achieved when two artists from seemingly different worlds step onto each other’s territories.

“At first, siyempre medyo pressured, kinakabahan. Siyempre, sir Gloc yan eh. Pero [nung] nandoon na kami sa studio, ang bilis lang ng mga pangyayari. Parang naging comfortable agad lahat. And everyone was giving their best,” Justin remarked in an interview with Wish 107.5.

In this live performance, SB19 and Gloc-9 brought that output to the Wish Bus — and marked a full-circle moment, as the two acts first crossed paths as nominees (and eventual winners) at the 6th WMAs back in 2021.

“Go Up” (Wish Bus Version)

Time may continue to tick, but some things just don’t fade away with it. Case in point: the charisma of this Wish Bus performance.

This video, recorded seven years ago, features their breakout single, “Go Up.” In hindsight, it has become their quintessential anthem of manifestation, as the song is about never abandoning your dreams and pouring your heart into achieve those.

Before SB19 dominated stages — local and international alike — they were, indeed, a passionate group of artists and wishers. And their journey to where they are now is proof that dreaming, combined with relentless work, can take you as far as you dare to go.

And true enough, borrowing the song’s words: “Kahit pa imposible, yeah, we gonna go up.”
